This Labor Day weekend the Great Coconut Grove Bed Race will once again take place, as is has since the 1970’s. Although the current bed race only shares in name with the one of yesteryear, the spirit is the same.
Participants compete in the race for charity by pushing “beds” up and down Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove. An full size twin bed must be aboard each speed machine, with four wheels, a headboard and footboard, propelled by human power only and decorations are required. Contestants are judged in several different categories which are judged by time, theme and décor separately.
All in all this is an event that truly brings the community together for a great cause- the Alonzo Mourning Charities and the University of Miami Sleep Program.
